of santa maria. nbc's mike taibbi reports. >> reporter: the kiss nightclub was packed with the usual saturday night crowd when at 2:00 in the morning, a disaster. the ground floor was filled with smoke. club security initially blocked several emergency exits, thinking patrons were leaving without paying and that left only a few ways out. in the ensuing panic, many victims were trampled, others died of smoke inhalation. witnesses told police the fire was sparked by a pyrotechnics show on stage, according to nick ravenskroft of itv news. >> the stunt on stage with the flare made the ceiling catch fire. >> reporter: whatever the precise cause, the fire spread incredibly quickly as the crowd struggled to find ways to safety. some clubgoers who did make it out, joined firemen and onlookers in their attempts to open new escape routes using sledge hammers and axes, but it was too late for many inside. does of victims were carried to arising ambulances, if they survived. santa maria's major trauma hospital was quickly overwhelmed. >> translator: the injured are scattered around the hospital.

meteorologist mike augustyniak of our cbs station wcco who says the northeast could get a nasty surprise at the end of this cold snap. >> good morning, charlie and norah. the coldest air has moved just to the east this morning. it's across the northeast after giving chicago its first subzero low yesterday in over 7 hundred days. we've now got single digits in detroit, pittsburgh, below zero in burlington. factor in the wind and it feels like 20 below there. 4 below in boston and 5 below in pittsburgh. the story is not much better for tomorrow. the overall weather pattern won't change with the cold stuff settled in the northeast and back in the midwest tomorrow as well. the jet stream, the storm highway is going to have to reconfigure until we get a warmup and by the weekend it could be happening. as that is happening there could be several inches of snow moving toward the mid-atlantic and toward boston. nothing like the snow and cold air that fell in the last couple of days. almost 2 feet in parts of new york and 6 to 8 inches in the western shores and lake superior. fo

st. what do we do now? mike lee joining me from capitol hill. senator lee, thanks for coming on. you know, i think a lot of americans are surprised to hear right now that we still have sequestering in place with all the rangeling going on in the last couple days. what's the plan? >> you know, at this point, there's no plan on the table because the attention has all been focused on the debt limit issue, and two are related, of course, because, ultimately, it's not the debt limit itself the problem. it is the spending that goes on propelling us forward with having the raise the debt limit every six to 18 months because we can't get spending under control. passing this in 2011, raised the debt limit then, put in place automatic cuts to kick in if the super committee dbt have a proposal. they are about to kick in. >> what do you think is going to happen? what's the talk? >> you know, there's a lot of talk in congress about the need to move towards targeted cuts of the same amount as what were called for in the sequesters. that takes a disproportionally large bite out of the defense infra

of the country. the weather channel's mike seidel is in knoxville, tennessee, where they're cleaning up today now that the worst appears to be over. mike, good morning. >> reporter: and good morning, lester. here in knoxville, temperatures stayed above freezing all night. so the ice from yesterday has melted. take a look at the streets yesterday. we had freezing rain for nine hours. about .4 inch of ice. this shut down a lot of roadways, hundred of accidents here up through kentucky, the carolinas. one fatality in the upstate of south carolina due to icy roads. power was not a big issue. only 4,000 customers, about 2% of the power base lost power here in knoxville. to the north, it was snowfall. let's head up to the buckeye state. in columbus, several inches of snow. this did not drop a lot of snow. amounts generally one to two inches. a swath from columbus into allegheny county near pittsburgh. cars were slipping and sliding on the roadways there. and in chicagoland, they finally got their first inch of snow after 335 days. the record streak ends. lester, you being from chicago can appreciate th

't just the big three. mike miller could barely walk. mike, you look better now. you looked broken down last year. but still hit seven three-pointers in the final game. i don't know how he did it, because he could not walk. he looked like an old man. mario chalmers earned himself a nickname from dwyane wade, which i am not allowed to repeat. deron howard, grandpa, became the first member of the fab five to win a ring. and coach continually set the tone and kept these guys motivated the entire way. so that team mentality, with everybody doing their part, is what finally put the heat over the top. and it's especially impressive when you think about everything they've had to deal with over the last few years. this team inspired a lot of passions on both sides. and i'm just talking about their dance moves now. we saw that video, lebron. but even though i'm a little disappointed that the bulls didn't make it, i do want to congratulate the heat for a well-earned championship. lebron said it's about damn time. and i want to thank them for taking the time this afternoon to spend with wounded wa
